There are many great sites, like this one, that give a novice blogger sound advice on how to get started. There is also an abundance of bad advice floating around that a new blogger should not heed. Today we will take a look at some of that bad advice.
Bad advice about content
You can fill in on uninspired days be re-posting another bloggers post.
Fact: No you can’t. Even if you put aside the fact that you are stealing content and violating copyright laws this is a bad idea. Your readers don’t want to read duplicate content it wastes their time. If you are truly stuck, offer commentary on a posting.
When starting up a site its best to begin with a lot of content, you don’t have to write it all. Just pull from an article bank.
Fact: The first part of this advice is valid, you should start strong. Article banks however are a bad idea. The piece is already published in you don’t know how many places. 99 times out of 100 this is just spam.
Bad advice on ads
Break up your postings with ads. This encourages readers to click.
Fact: No, it doesn’t. If you use a graphic ad readers just scroll right by it. Text ads can be confusing in an article. You might garner a few accidental clicks, but you will annoy your readers in the process.
Bad advice on linking
A new blog needs to link as much as possible, to every site it can, this will increase site rankings.
Fact: Only relevant links will increase your rankings. Putting in a link to Google every paragraph won’t impress them. Not to mention that too many irrelevant links will annoy readers. Link when you have something relevant and appropriate to add to the conversation with your link.
When looking at any piece of advice remember to evaluate it before you put it into practice. If it seems dubious (or like it will annoy readers) then pass it up.
