There are a lot of sites out there that will allow you to embed video onto your blog or site. Some sites manage to inegrate video into a text based site with panache while others manage to make a mess of their sites in the process. If you want to use video without making your site look disjointed then follow these simple guidelines.
Check the size of the video against the size of the space. You need to be sure your lengths and widths will fit. No one wants to have to scroll back and forth to watch a video, or worse have it cut off completely.
1. Be sure to give your movies a bit of padding space if you are going to stack them on top of, or next to each other. This will prevent your readers from becoming distracted and enhance the visual appeal.
2. Group similar videos. Keeping videos of a similar nature together is a courtesy to your viewers. Some common groupings include:
Topic (videos about video games)
Format (game and movie reviews)
Brand (several videos about Twilight)
Theme (Full videos, indy films)
Genre (comedy, action, AMV)
Holiday season
Same presenter or host (NBC, Suze Ormond, Oprah)
Same structure (How to’s)
3. Label your videos. It may seem obvious to you what a video is about but your viewers may not be so well versed in your site or familiar with the video. Labeling will allow your readers to find things easily.
If you follow these guidelines then your videos will become an asset to your site. Of course, these guidelines speak nothing to the content of your videos which you are going to have to use your best judgment based on the content of the site and your audience.
