FAQs
What is WordPress and what do I need it for?
WordPress is the best Content Management System for Homepages of all kind in the world. From a technical standpoint, I can tell you first hand WordPress (.org) is the easiest blogging platform to set up on a server. Installation is a breeze and maintenance is practically nonexistent. On the user end, WordPress offers the flexibility to create the blog you want, whether it means running ads and making money or simply maintaining control over your own content, not to mention keeping the rights (!). With WordPress, anybody could run a professional homepage!
How do I start a WordPress Homepage (Blog)?
Starting your own blog based on WordPress is NO. BIG. DEAL. Don't hesitate because you don't know anything about WordPress, installation, web hosts, themes or functions. You'll learn it all very quickly!
First of all, your self-hosted WordPress blog is your own blog. There is never a need to worry about being controlled by or working for third parties. Platforms like Blogger or wordpress.com are OK when you first start out. But once you want to make real money with your content and keep control and copyrights, a self-hosted blog is the only way to go.
So here’s how to get started:
- Find a webhost such as Hostgator. Hostgator provides everything you need and plenty of extras: Webspace, MYSQL and support. I've been very satisfied with them.
-
Download the latest edition of WordPress - directly from WordPress.
- Upload the files as described here to your Webhost - using FTP via a desktop program like Filezilla (free). Sounds a bit nerdy, but it’s not. Anyone can do this. FTP simply gets your files up on your server. It's pretty much like the file manager of your PC allowing you to drag and drop files from your PC to your web server.
- Create a Mysql-Database in the backend of your Webhosting Account. Follow the installation guide and your own self-hosted WordPress should be online within minutes. You can even import any existing blog from Blogger, WordPress.com and other non-self-hosted platforms.
- Get a nice theme - of course I recommend using one of TheBuckmaker.com - and custom functions from the plugin repository. Any questions you might have will be answered in the WordPress Codex or the Support Forums.
Is that difficult or complicated? The process may be a little daunting the first time you try it, but give it a shot. By the time you get to your second and third blogs, setup will be a breeze!
How do I install WordPress Themes?
- First, download the theme to your PC. It is a compressed directory.
- Upload your theme directory (ZIP-file) by using the new THEME UPLOADER
- You can now directly preview and activate your uploaded theme.
- That’s it. Edit your theme using the WordPress Editor, or just enjoy the theme as it is.

May I redistribute these Themes?
Sure! Use them, edit them, link to them, offer them for download on your site, port them to other CMS systems, write about them. Spread the love!
